Chancellor told to increase tax credit to hit child poverty target

Chancellor Gordon Brown has been told he needs to increase the child tax credit by £3 per week if the government is to meet its target of cutting child poverty by a quarter next year.

The Institute of Fiscal Studies says the decision would cost the Treasury around £1 billion each year.
