Lords break ranks to defeat reform plans
Peers broke with convention last night to inflict a symbolic defeat on the government's Queen's Speech plans for reform of the House of Lords.
The upper chamber voted against proposals to remove the remaining 92 hereditary peers and scrap the role of lord chancellor, signalling a bloody battle ahead when the full legislation is put before parliament next year.
