The chancellor is set to unveil plans for new tax-friendly investment property trusts, in a bid to boost the rented housing market.

Gordon Brown will use his pre-Budget report next week to outline proposals to help institutions invest in homes to let.

He will also publish the Barker review on housing supply as part of a combined effort to end the boom and bust property cycle and reduce dependency on variable mortgages.
