Writing in the FT today, former Conservative treasurer Lord Ashcroft calls on donors to open their wallets and back the leadership of Michael Howard.

He says that "big donors should act now" to help the party prepare for the next general election.

But he also challenges the traditional independence of Conservative constituency associations, pointing out that 85 per cent of the party's constituency agents are based in safe seats.
