Zimbabwe has announced it is quitting the Commonwealth "with immediate effect".

President Mugabe's move came after Commonwealth leaders agreed that Zimbabwe's membership should remain suspended.

Over the weekend the issue had split the assembled heads of government, with South Africa initially vetoing the continued suspension of its African neighbour.

But the UK and South African governments later reached agreement on Zimbabwe's suspension.
