Blunkett plans £500 charge for migrants

Migrants entering the UK face a £500 surcharge under government legislation.

Small print in the new Asylum and Immigration Bill allows the Home Office to impose the levy, which is likely to raise around £450 million a year.

David Blunkett is set to come under fire from businesses which rely on migrant workers, reports the Guardian.

But the Home Office has defended the move, saying those entering the UK will gain from having access to the labour market.
