Chancellor Gordon Brown was boosted yesterday by official figures showing Britain is on course to meet his forecasts for economic growth next year.

The UK economy grew at the fastest pace for a year in the third quarter of this year.

But the statistics also signalled that an interest rate rise in the early part of 2004 is even more likely.
