Health spending swells to over £80bn

Office for National Statistics figures yesterday showed government health spending to have broken the £80 billion barrier last year, as extra tax revenues kicked in.

Health secretary John Reid said the sum took Britain closer to matching the European Union average by 2008, but private healthcare spending also rose.
