John Reid has more than doubled the number of NHS hospitals that will gain foundation status next year.

Although he has also promised an independent review of the policy before allowing a second wave of hospitals to gain independence, the health secretary named 32 hospitals which will become foundation trusts in October 2004, six months after the first group of 25 achieve the status in April next year.
