Leaders of the Fire Brigades Union have postponed threats of an immediate national strike by agreeing to ballot members on the pay deal offered by employers.

But a vote against the deal - the staged implementation of which has prompted the latest wave of fire fighters' anger - would lead to an automatic strike ballot.
