Ministers support university admissions changes

Higher education minister Alan Johnson has indicated that the government will support calls to change the rules of admission to universities.

Under the proposed change, students would apply for university places once they have received their A Level results. But institutions have reacted cautiously - arguing that exams would have to be sat earlier to accommodate the move.

Meanwhile, the Department for Education and Skills has accused universities of discriminating against students that study A Levels at sixth form colleges.
