Network Rail is considering taking control of many of Britain's railway stations.

"We inherited a company which operated in a way which we didn't know and which we needed to understand," a spokesman said.

"It would be strange to look at stations and not review whether the ones we've got are the right ones. It's certainly been a general view that on the stations we run directly, we've done a reasonably good job."
