Davis sparks death penalty row

David Davis has revealed the first cracks in Tory unity by calling for the restoration of the death penalty.

The shadow home secretary said capital punishment should be reintroduced for serial killers.

Senior Conservatives, including John Major, said the issue was one of conscience and dismissed Davis's remarks as a personal statement and not an indication of party policy.
