The chancellor sought to shed his prudent, dour image yesterday, telling the Times that he was missing his new young son and "sleepless nights".

It "is hard not to feel optimistic", Gordon Brown said. "Even nappy changing is not too difficult," he added. "I have done it, but I am not an expert."
