The World Trade Organisation has ruled against America's emergency steel tariffs, a move that has prompted the European Union to threaten retaliatory sanctions against US goods.

After the WTO ruled that the extraordinary duties on imported steel of up to 30 per cent imposed by President Bush in March last year were illegal, the European Commission demanded an end to the tariffs.
