Ahead of his state visit to the UK President Bush has lavished praise on Tony Blair.

Interviewed by British journalists he says: "Freedom and peace. Tony Blair is making decisions for the right reasons, he is the least political person I've dealt with.

"Never once has he said to me, ever, 'Gosh, I'm feeling terrible pressure'. I have never heard him complain about the polls, or wring his hands. The relationship is a very good relationship because I admire him, and I admire somebody who stands tough."

The president also reveals he is looking forward to visiting Blair's Sedgefield constituency, but warns: "My Geordie is probably just about as bad as my English."

He adds: "I never dreamed when I was living in Midland, Texas, that I would be staying in Buckingham Palace. I've got my tails set and ready to go. Had to rent them..."

Writing in the Independent today Robin Cook condemns the prime minister as dishonest, shallow and cheap in justifying the president's visit.

Today's Express reveals that the prime minister has still not fixed a date to receive his Congressional Gold Medal despite being awarded the honour five months ago.
