The semi-public feuding between the prime minister and Gordon Brown continues in today's papers.

The chancellor is said to be angry that Tony Blair denied his request for a seat on Labour's ruling National Executive Committee.

Blair's move is thought to be part of an ongoing battle over general election campaign tactics.

Brown has chaired the previous two campaign committees, but Blair has taken the role for himself this time around.

The FT speculates that by marking out ground heavily critical of the EU's economic record in an article yesterday, Brown is developing a distinct policy agenda from his rival.

Meanwhile, the Independent says that the chancellor has scored a victory over the prime minister by preventing him calling a referendum on the euro before the next general election.

It says that the Cabinet has agreed that the Queen's Speech will include only a draft bill on how a referendum would be held.

The Telegraph claims Brown is furious about the re-emergence of Peter Mandelson as a power within Downing Street.

He is said to fear the ex-Cabinet minister's role in masterminding strategy.

"This has been going on since the summer, and for once Tony stood up to Gordon," one MP told the Guardian yesterday. "But if there was not a row about this, there would have been a row about something else."
