Be thankful for NHS, Reid tells bosses

Businesses should consider the contribution the NHS makes to their profits before criticising its lack of productivity, the health secretary said last night.

Speaking at the CBI annual dinner, John Reid argued the NHS was "a tangible asset that British business chooses not to put on its balance sheet even though it is worth millions of pounds in helping British businesses' efficiency".

The CBI has been critical of the government's failure to control costs and increase productivity within the service.
