John Reid has revealed plans to cut jobs at the Department of Health by more than a third.

The health secretary told a Commons committee that he had to "lead by example" in encouraging efficiency at all levels of the NHS.

Reid said he wanted to concentrate the department's focus on strategy, setting standards and defending the core values of the NHS as he detailed proposals to shed 1,400 of his Whitehall staff.
