John Reid will today back plans for the NHS to import methods used by private healthcare corporations in the US.

The government is seeking to learn how it can reduce the length of time patients spend in hospital.

Speaking in Washington, the health secretary will reveal that he is conducting previously unannounced experiments in eight areas of England, using techniques developed in the US.
