Claims that NHS hospitals are losing millions of pounds to subsidise the treatment of private patients are being investigated by parliament's spending watchdog.

Today's Guardian reports that the National Audit Office has asked all NHS trusts with private beds to provide information to show that they are sticking to strict accounting rules that prevent the health service losing money by carrying out private practice.
