Northern Ireland's Social Democratic and Labour Party yesterday sought to defend its vulnerable position in the forthcoming Ulster assembly elections by bringing in a team of top advisers.

Former Labour spin doctor Adrian McMenamin joined consultants from the Irish Republic in a bid to modernise the SDLP's image in response to the threat from Sinn Fein in the battle to be the leading nationalist party.
