GM crops 'more damaging' than conventional approach

Government efforts to win support for GM crops were dealt a blow yesterday when scientific trials reported that they could be more harmful to the environment than existing crops.

Whilst GM maize production was found to be less harmful, growing GM oilseed rape and sugar beet had a potentially greater impact on the environment than conventional practices.

The research is likely to lead to a delay in ministers announcing plans for the commercialisation of GM crops.
