Foreign secretary Jack Straw has said he is optimistic the UN will pass the latest resolution setting a deadline of December 15 for Iraq's governing council to finalise a timetable for drafting a constitution and holding elections.

And international development secretary Hilary Benn yesterday told MPs the government would spend nearly half a billion pounds on the reconstruction of Iraq.
