Research from Mercer Human Resources has concluded that couples need to save more than £180,000 for their retirement in order for the effort to be worthwhile.

The figure is the sum they would receive as of right from the basic state pension, pension credit, housing benefit and council tax benefit.

The company warned that 80 per cent of today's working population will be "caught in the means-test trap within half a century".
