Kaufman calls for BBC apology

Senior Labour MP Gerald Kaufman has called on BBC chief Greg Dyke to apologise when he appears before the Hutton inquiry today.

He said the corporation's director general should apologise for stories for the train of events which led to the death of government scientist Dr David Kelly.

"[He should say] 'I'm sorry. We shouldn't have done it. We are going to make sure that things like that never happen again in the BBC. The Today programme has got out of control'," said the chairman of the culture committee.

"I believe Mr Dyke ought to think about the whole governance of the BBC, because that has been thrown into doubt.

"The board of governors, some of whom apparently wanted to delve into this further, didn't exercise their role as a body of accountability."
