Former Commons leader Robin Cook is embroiled in a row over students moving into the Edinburgh flat above him.

Cook has written to Edinburgh Council expressing fears about the noise level and security risk from "youthful tenants".

He objected to a licence for four students to take over the flat.

"Although I am no longer in government I remain very prominent in public life and it is important for me that my home base is a place of privacy where I am secure from any form of confrontation," he wrote.

Students from the university described his comments as "pompous and patronising" and the Scottish Tories asked if Cook had considered himself a security risk in his student days.
