Mandelson under fire

Today's Mirror claims two of Tony Blair's "most trusted advisors" have attacked the re-emergence of Peter Mandelson as a powerful voice by the prime minister's side.

A source says: "He has been in the Cabinet twice and was driven out in disgrace. Who's to say that the same thing won't happen again? This time he could bring the PM down with him.

"I'm not going to name names but two of Tony's most trusted aides felt the need to question his decisions regarding Peter.

"They acted in the last few days as the prime minister's increasing reliance on Mandelson became apparent.

"I think the main thrust of their complaint was that the Labour Party and voters at large would have something to say about this comeback."

The Mail claims he has been accused by supporters of Gordon Brown of sowing dissent in government ranks. He is blamed for claims that the chancellor is leading opposition to ID cards.
