NUT threatens strike over classroom assistants

The National Union of Teachers is threatening to take industrial action in schools over several contentious issues.

The union objects to government plans to use classroom assistants to teach lessons and to tests being taken by two million pupils aged seven, 11 and 14.

Leaders of Britain's biggest teaching union warn that new teaching regulations - coming into force at the start of the new term this week - will open the way to the use of unqualified assistants to take classes.
