The TUC has promised a battle with the government over public services during this month's conference after it issued a strongly worded statement from its general council.

Union leaders pledged to kill off plans for foundation hospitals in what the Telegraph describes as "Tony Blair's most serious challenge from the Labour left".

"The government will fail if public servants are demotivated and believe that they have no voice in the process of change," the statement said.
