Peter Mandelson is again operating by Tony Blair's side, reports today's Telegraph.

The former Cabinet minister is said to be taking a lead at weekly planning meetings and the prime minister permits him to issue orders and chase progress in an effort to sharpen the government's performance.

A Downing Street spokesman denied that Mandelson was chairing meetings on a regular basis and dismissed press reports he was set for appointment to the European Commission.
