Britain's manufacturing sector saw its best performance in 15 months during August, with its second month in a row of rising overall activity, according to the CIPS/Reuters purchasing managers' survey.

The survey, which demonstrated rising output, orders and exports and helped boost the FTSE 100 index which gained more than one per cent by the close.
