New Scottish fears over shrinking population

Scottish first minister Jack McConnell will today unveil new measures to boost Scotland's declining population by encouraging more immigration.

The measures will include a "one stop advisory service" to provide assistance to migrants wishing to move north of the border.

Meanwhile, UK-wide figures yesterday showed that the number of people moving to Britain from the US and European Union is at its lowest since the early 1990s.

There were record numbers of immigrants arriving from Pakistan, the Middle East and countries outside the Commonwealth.
