Supporters of modernising Tory chairman Theresa May have struck back against Tim Yeo.

The trade and industry spokesman accused May of holding back progress on reshaping the Conservative Party.

However friends of May said Yeo had been unwise to launch an attack at a time when unity was at a premium.
