US backs generic drug deal

A deal which will allow the developing world to produce generic drugs to treat illnesses such as Aids is set to be agreed at next month's World Trade Organisation meeting in Mexico.

The US appears set to drop its opposition to the move, providing assurances are given that the drugs will not find their way onto the market in the West.

The agreement is being seen as an attempt to prevent a collapse in the current round of global trade negotiations.
