The congestion charge completes its first six months of operation today.

"The charge was introduced for one simple reason: to reduce the congestion that had been crippling central London," said mayor Ken Livingstone.

"Six months on, it continues to work extremely well. Latest polls show 73 per cent of Londoners think the charge is effective."
