A new breed of teacher is being lured into the classroom, according to new research by the Teacher Training Agency.

Older people are switching careers because of dwindling pensions, job cuts and the strong demand for their skills.

People aged between 50 and 54 going into teacher training has lept by 94 per cent in the last four years.
