The Royal Mail has renewed its plea to workers not to go on strike after postmen and women received ballot papers on industrial action.

Talks at conciliation service Acas broke down on Wednesday but Royal Mail managers adopted a softer tone yesterday.

"We're clearly not making the case in a way that the union finds credible," a source said.
