Unions gear up to challenge government

The prime minister is set to face an uncomfortable autumn at the hands of the trade unions.

The FT reports that sharply worded motions to be debated at the TUC congress will set the scene for a series of skirmishes which will carry on into Labour's annual party conference.

Unions such as Unison and the TGWU are set to challenge the government on policies such as foundation hospitals.

The GMB will also call on ministers to address the crisis in the manufacturing sector.
