The transport secretary is today set to announce a significant boost to road capacity across England.

Attention will focus on Alistair Darling's expected announcement on widening the M25. He is expected to tell MPs that the London orbital motorway will be expanded to eight lanes over four years, at a cost of £1.7 billion.

The transport secretary is also expected to give the green light to other road building programmes across England.
