Former minister Stephen Byers is set to challenge his former colleagues not to "give in to right-wing populism" over the issue of asylum.

The former transport secretary will tell the Social Market Foundation tomorrow that the government "must not lose sight of the issues that really matter to the British people".

He said Labour would pay a "heavy price" if the issue was not tackled.
