Fears over 'stressed' Gilligan

Fears over the health of BBC journalist Andrew Gilligan led the foreign affairs committee to delay the release of a transcript of his evidence to a recent hearing.

The move followed pressure from BBC chairman Gavyn Davies who was said to be concerned at the "stressed" state of the journalist.

It emerged yesterday that the Hutton inquiry will not be televised - although the media will be allowed to report its hearings in full.

In an interview with today's Times, Tessa Jowell reveals that the Hutton inquiry will help to shape the future of the BBC and the role of its board of governors.

The culture secretary reveals that this autumn the government will begin a "radical and wide-ranging review" about renewing the BBC's charter.

"I will consider very carefully any recommendations and conclusions which can be drawn from the Hutton inquiry in relation to the BBC," she says.

Meanwhile a YouGov poll for today's Telegraph finds that almost two thirds of voters believe the government has lost control of events.
