The Bank of England voted by a margin of eight to one in favour of this month's quarter point reduction in interest rates.

The only dissenting voice was that of Rachel Lomax, the new deputy governor of the bank.

Lomax, a former Treasury civil servant, said the "benign" economic environment negated the need for a cut.
