Business and council leaders have given a cool reception to John Prescott's plans to develop derelict areas along the Thames gateway, the FT reports.

The newspaper suggests the deputy prime minister will face an uphill struggle in attempting to secure £3 billion in private sector investment.

Prescott is planning to build an additional 120,000 new homes in five areas over the coming 20 years.
