The BBC will play the capital markets for the first time today with an £800 million bond to finance the redevelopment of its headquarters at Broadcasting House.

John Smith, BBC finance director, said: "We looked at a number of financing options, and we decided to go to the bond market because bonds are so cheap today. That's savvy because it won't last."
