Britain signs up to controversial extradition deal

The home secretary will come under fire this week with the signing of a "totally one-sided" extradition treaty with the United States.

Under the deal, which will not be debated in parliament, American prosecutors will no longer have to show reasonable grounds that someone committed an offence.

Instead, the US authorities will simply provide a statement of the facts of the offence.

It is also retrospective, allowing the US to renew extradition claims previously thrown out by British courts for lack of evidence.

However, British prosecutors do not get the same powers with American citizens who are guaranteed greater levels of protection by their constitution.
