Richard Gillingwater has been appointed as the government's first chief of the of the new Shareholder Executive.

The chairman of investment bank Credit Suisse First Boston will be responsible for the management of publicly owned shares in commercial companies such as the Royal Mail, British Energy and the Royal Mint.
