The Real IRA considered recruiting a former French Foreign Legionnaire to assassinate a leading British politician, "someone like Tony Blair", a court was told yesterday.

David Rupert, an American businessman hired by the FBI to spy on the dissident republicans, said Michael McKevitt, the alleged founder and leader of the Real IRA, wanted to stage a terrorist incident "to overshadow Omagh".
