The chancellor warned europhile ministers last night that there will be no wavering on the primacy of economics when he reassesses his five tests for euro entry next year.

Gordon Brown said the Treasury review will follow "the same comprehensive and rigorous approach" as used in last week's decision.

Outgoing Bank of England chief Sir Eddie George also gave his backing to the chancellor's euro stance.
