In a keynote speech later this week, new health secretary John Reid will adopt a less confrontational style that his predecessor, Alan Milburn.

Reid will stress his commitment to the "traditional Bevanite principles" of the NHS in a bid to win over MPs concerned at the foundation hospitals plan.

Meanwhile, new OECD figures show that health spending has grown faster in Britain than almost any other western country over the last decade.
